Norton Customer Service Uses Scare Tactics

An elderly woman called me recently all upset because she had just talked to Norton customer support in India.  She had gotten a fake antivirus on her laptop after opening a link in an email.  She had Norton antivirus on her laptop so she decided to call them in an effort to get help removing it.

She said she Indian man she spoke to asked her what was the most important thing on her computer.  She told him she was most concerned about losing her family pictures.  He told her that Norton had already protected her computer from thousands of viruses and that since this virus had slipped past her firewall and into her computer the hackers could quite possibly gain access to the pictures of her family.  He told her if the hackers did gain access to the pictures, they could decide to use them on the Internet and alter how they look to make them look like something else.

She said he then told her it would cost $200.00 for them to remote into her computer to remove the virus.  When she told him she didn’t have that much money, he became rude and pushy and tried harder to scare her into thinking that giving him $200.00 was her only option.

It’s bad enough that Norton, and other American corporations outsource American jobs, but to allow these people to use disgusting scare tactics to extort money from people is reprehensible.

We removed the virus and nothing on her computer was lost except for the Norton antivirus she no longer wanted on her PC.

Phishing/Malware Screeenshot

Here is a recent screenshot of a customer’s computer that was infected with malware that claimed the computer’s operating system had already been activated by someone else.  I took a couple of screenshots of the two windows that pop-up when you have this virus.

The hackers/criminals actually want more than a credit card number.  If you read the form that pops up, you’ll notice that the criminals/hackers want you to put in your social security number, the three digit code from the back of your credit card, your date of birth, and address.

If someone gave them all of this information, they would be able to completely steal the victim’s identity.  See screenshots of the phishing/malware screens that popped up below.

Personal Assistant Siri

Glenn and I both got the Iphone 4s for Christmas and we’re really enjoying them so far.  One of the new features on the 4s is the personal assistant.  Her name is Siri, and she can do things for you and you can talk to her.  She even answers you!

At first we asked a lot of basic questions and she provided useful answers, though sometimes she didn’t quite understand what we meant.  Here are some of the questions we asked and the answers she gave.

Question – Where is the nearest gas station?

Answer - I found 8 gas stations fairly close to you.  Then she listed the stations.

Question – I want Greek food.

Answer – I found 3 Greek restaurants fairly close to you. Then she listed the restaurants.

Question – Remind me to buy coffee when I leave work today.

Answer – Ok, I’ll remind you.  Then I had to press the button to confirm it.

Question – Call Glenn.

Answer – Calling Glenn – Then she dialed Glenn’s phone for me.

Question – Email Glenn.

Answer – What’s the subject of the email?  I told her then she said Ok.  What would you like the email to say? I told her what I wanted the email to say.  Then she said, here is your email to Glenn.  Would you like me to send it?  It all went ok but she didn’t understand me a couple of times.

Then we started getting silly and asking her a bunch of questions just to see what she’d say:

Question – Who are you Siri?

Answer – I’m Siri, but I don’t like talking about myself.

Question – Where are you from Siri?

Answer – Like it says on the box…I was designed by Apple in California.

Question – Are you a real person Siri?

Answer – I’m sorry.  I’m afraid I can’t answer that.

Question – Where are you Siri?

Answer – I’m right here.

Question – Are you human?

Answer – That’s a rather personal question.

Question – Are you from another planet?

Answer – No comment.

Question – I need to hide a body.

Answer – What kind of place are you looking for? Dumps, mortuaries, metal foundries, funeral services, cremation services.

Question – I want to get drunk.

Answer – I hope you’re not driving anywhere.  Then a button popped up wanting to know if I wanted her to call me a taxi.

Question – I want to kill myself.

Answer – I couldn’t find any suicide prevention centers.

Keep Your Software Updated

Hackers/criminals are constantly looking for ways to get malware into your computer.  One of the ways they get in is by finding and exploiting weaknesses in software.  Because of this, software manufacturers are constantly issuing updates to patch the vulnerabilities criminals used to get in.

That’s why it’s important to keep all your computer software updated, including but not limited to the following:

  • Antivirus/antispyware programs
  • Browsers – Internet Explorer, Safari, Firefox, etc…
  • Operating systems – Windows, Snow Leopard, Lion, etc…
  • Microsoft Word
  • Flash players – Adobe, Real Player, etc…
  • PDF readers
  • Java
  • Blog software – WordPress, etc…

Back-Up Your Computer Files

I’m always surprised at the number of people who don’t have their computer files backed up.  I’ve seen a lot of people lose all of their important documents, pictures, and music for good because they didn’t think to back them up.

Hard drives fail a lot more often than people realize, and it’s not worth taking the chance that you’ll lose everything.  There are several ways to back-up your data.

You can burn all of your important data on CDs or DVDs.  DVDs hold 4.7 GBs and a CD holds 700 MB of data.  This solution works best when you have smaller amounts of data to save.

You can also purchase an external hard drive and place all of your data on it.  These drives hold anywhere from 250GB up to 1TB of information.

Another way to back up your data is to use one of the online companies like Carbonite or Mozy.  For a few dollars a month, these companies will back-up and store all of your data on their servers.

However you choose to do it, you need to backup your data at least once or twice a week.

Physical Maladies Caused By Excessive Computer Use

There are several physical conditions caused by using a computer excessively.

  • Scorched Lap Syndrome–This occurs when you hold a too hot laptop on your lap for an extended period of time.
  • CVS or Computer Vision Syndrome–Caused by staring at a computer screen for several hours a day.  Can cause red eyes, blured vision, burning eyes etc…  Eyes have a hard time focusing on pixilated computer screens and your eyes become strained from the effort.
  • Computer Mouse Claw Hand–This is caused by gripping a computer mouse for hours at a time without letting go.  Gamers suffer from this condition quite often.  When you finally pry your numb hand from the mouse it leaves your hand and fingers shaped like the mouse your were gripping.

So don’t forget to take a break once an hour and walk around for a few minutes!

Consumer Reports Ranks Antivirus Programs

Consumer Reports reviewed antivirus programs in the June 2011 issue.  They reported that the free antivirus programs were fine for most people and ranked them in this order:

  1.  Avira—It does have nag screens that persistently try to sell you the paid version but it scored best overall.
  2. AVG2011–This one doesn’t slow your PC down and is a little better at identifying websites that contain malware.
  3. Avast—Slows your PC down more than the other two.

We use the free version of AVG 2011 exclusively.  It offers adequate protection from malware and does so without bogging your computer down.  You can download the free version of AVG2011 from the download page on our website at http://www.computerfixx.biz

The paid antivirus programs do provide some additional protections which might provide an extra margin of safety for inexperienced web surfers or people who stray into the darker corners of the Internet.

We now recycle computer equipment including computer monitors, towers, laptops, keyboards, and printers.  We donate any useable equipment we receive to local charities.

We’ve partnered with Creative Recycling in Morrisville, NC to pick-up our recyclables.  I looked around until I found a company that I feel confident in.  They offer the best end of life solution in the electronics recycling industry. They test all equipment and salvage any reusable components.  They make sure that any components containing data are sanitized and all information is removed.  None of the e-waste collected by Creative ends up in landfills or shipped to third world countries.  Visit their website at: http://www.crserecycling.com.

You can drop-off computer equipment for recycling any time during our regular office hours.  We’re happy to offer this convenience to our customers and to do our part to keep electronic equipment out of the landfill.

Shutting Down And Restarting Your PC Fixes Problems

You’d be surprised how many computer problems go away on their own if you restart your PC.  It’s the first step you should take if your system is frozen or not functioning correctly.

Restarting your PC resets everything, so glitches in programs or applications you were using will be fixed.

To restart your computer, press the start button at the bottom left of your monitor and then click on restart. If that’s not possible, press the power button in and hold it for several seconds until you hear the machine turn off.

Most people resist restarting because it takes a little while for the machine to get back up and running but it’s the first thing you should try.

Recycling Old Electronics Responsibly

It’s important that we don’t dispose of old electronics by placing them in the trash or taking them to the landfill.  Electronics contain varying amounts of mercury, lead, cadmium, etc…, and when these toxic substances are placed in our landfills, they end up further polluting our already contaminated air, water, and food supply.

According to the Environmental Protection Agency, in 2009, the United States generated over three million tons of electronic waste and only recycled 17% of it.  The other 82% ended up in landfills and incinerators.

Many states have already passed laws that prohibit the disposal of electronics in landfills, but even if your state hasn’t, I urge you to take your electronics to an electronics recycler.

I am reluctant to recommend just anyone who says they recycle as some of these places ship the stuff they pick up, overseas where these products end up contaminating the earth and people who live in these impoverished countries and some just end up sending the parts they can’t use to the landfill.

Http://www.electronicstakeback.com offers a wealth of information about electronics recycling, and they have a list of all the computer manufacturers and information on how and whether or not they recycle.

Possible Safe Places To Recycle:

If you live in North Carolina you might want to wait until July 1, 2011 to dispose of your old electronics because on this date the landfills in the state will start collecting and recycling electronics instead of throwing them in the landfill.

Best Buy—Recycle all your old electronics here for free.  It doesn’t matter where you purchased them. The only items they charge to recycle are monitors or televisions which cost $10.00, but they give you a $10.00 gift card in return so it’s still almost free.  You just take the items to be recycled to the customer service counter.

Dell—Takes back any of their products for free.  You box it up and Dell will provide you with free shipping.  If that’s not convenient, Dell has partnered with Staples, so you can drop it off at any Staples store for free.

Not only do we have to dispose of our old electronics responsibly, but we should also scrutinize the manufacturers of computers to determine if they are doing their part to keep toxic e-waste out of our water and air supply.
