A customer came in and told me that Microsoft had just called him. This Microsoft employee told him they had been monitoring his computer and that he had a lot of malware and they needed to log in and repair his computer. They directed him to a certain website and instructed him to click on something in the website. At this point my customer became suspicious and started asking questions. The scammer sensed my customer’s hesitation and told him he could speak to his supervisor if he decided to call back and get the “repair” done. He gave him a phone number to call.
This is a scam and I’m hearing this story, or something similar, nearly every day. No one from Microsoft, or any other company for that matter, is monitoring your computer. No legitimate company will ever call you and ask to remote into your computer in order to repair it. I’ve had several customers who let the cybercriminals remote into their computer. Remember, anyone who logs into your computer has access to all of your computer files and can steal your information. They can also install malware that gives them remote access into your computer anytime they want it.
