Question: Why do people write computer viruses?
Answer: There are many reasons why people write the malicious code we call malware. Some people get a thrill from causing damage to other people’s property, some just like to see if they can do it. But the biggest reason is money.
One of the most popular types of malware these days is the “fake antivirus.” It usually pops up after you’ve downloaded some type of free program like a game or music. It pretends to be an antivirus program and tells you to pay $59.00 or more to remove the malware it found on your computer. Some people actually pull out their credit card and pay. But whether you pay or not, your PC will still be infected with this malware. Other malware these days encrypts your computer files and holds them hostage unless you pay the criminals $400.00 or $500.00 for the key to unencrypt them.
Other types of malware attempt to get your passwords and credit card numbers so they can steal money from your credit card or bank account. Nothing motivates criminals like money and as this type of malware has been so profitable, it’s likely to become even more prevalent.
