Adware, crapware, bloatware, and junkware are all amusing terms used to describe the unwanted, PC slowing software that comes installed on your new computer. These so-called free trials start using nag screens to prompt you to make a purchase after 30 days.
This is an old problem that isn’t getting any better and probably won’t. The PC manufacturers take money from third party companies to fill your new computer with junk software. It’s like selling advertisements on your new computer.
Some of this software doesn’t slow your new computer down, but much of it does and some of it compromises the security of your PC.
If you don’t want to spend all the time necessary to remove this junk, you can take your new PC to a computer repair shop and pay a technician to remove it. This is a service I provide all the time.
Another alternative is to buy your new computer directly from the manufacturer online. You can request that no junkware be added to the computer. This also gives you the chance to customize the options you would like to have on your new PC.
You might consider buying a PC from a manufacturer’s business line. These PC’s tend to have little to no junk pre-loaded on them. Computers designed for business also last longer than computers designed for end users. Another plus to this option is that manufacturers use higher quality parts in business machines. For example, the Dell Latitude is designed for business and the Dell Inspiron is for consumers.
A fourth possibility is to buy a custom built desktop computer. These computers last for years and are easy to upgrade because they don’t contain propriety parts. They’re also faster.
Finally, Microsoft is now offering a line of computers that don’t contain any trialware. Microsoft Signature
I’d like to see manufacturer’s offer consumers a crap free PC if they pay $50.00 or $100.00 more. Most people would readily pay extra.
