Another customer came in today that was called by hackers pretending to be with Microsoft. He let them remote into his computer. They used the same old, your computer is infected and needs to be scanned, story. They placed a fake scanner on his screen that showed his computer contained malware. This is just an easy scare tactic to get you to pay them for virus removal that you don’t need.
Finally they showed him the price for this scam. See photos. When the customer refused to pay the hacker, he got pushy and mean. Never allow anyone you don’t know to remote into your PC and remember that no legitimate company will ever call and ask to remote into your computer.
This old scam refuses to die. In fact, it seems to be getting more and more widespread which just goes to show it must be making these criminals a lot of money.
There are plenty of legitimate companies that do remote malware removal but none of them would ever call you to tell you that your PC is infected. You would have to call them. Also, depending on the severity of your malware infection, it would be best to take your PC to a local computer repair shop and let them remove it for you.
